"หนังสือเรื่อง Bridging the Horizons นี้ เรียบเรียงขึ้นจากประสบการณ์เรียนรู้แลกเปลี่ยนข้ามวัฒนธรรมระหว่างนักศึกษาและคณาจารย์ของสถาบันเทคโนโลยีพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าคุณทหารลาดกระบัง กับเพื่อนร่วมงานชาวต่างชาติจากสถาบันอุดมศึกษาชั้นนำของประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกาและสหราชอาณาจักร ผ่านการศึกษามรดกทางศิลปกรรมและสถาปัตยกรรม วิถีชีวิตของผู้คนตลอดจนบริบททางทางสังคมและวัฒนธรรม ในพื้นที่ภาคกลางและภาคเหนือของประเทศไทย ด้วยกิจกรรมการเรียนรู้จากโครงงานและการเก็บข้อมูลภาคสนามร่วมกัน ระหว่างปี พ.ศ. 2556 ถึง 2561 การนำเสนอประสบการณ์เรียนรู้แลกเปลี่ยนข้ามวัฒนธรรมในข้างต้นนั้น ตั้งอยู่บนพื้นฐานของการบูรณาการองค์ความรู้จากหลากหลายศาสตร์ อาทิ สถาปัตยกรรมและการออกแบบ ประวัติศาสตร์ ภูมิศาสตร์ สังคมวิทยา โบราณคดี และวิศวกรรมโครงสร้าง ประกอบกับระเบียบวีธีวิจัยทางมานุษยวิทยาและศึกษาศาสตร์ทั้งในเชิงปริมาณและคุณภาพ โดยอาศัยแนวคิดเรื่องการประสานงาน การสร้างความร่วมมือ และการทำงานร่วมกัน เป็นแกนหลักสำหรับการวิเคราะห์และอรรถาธิบาย ผู้เขียนหวังเป็นอย่างยิ่งว่าสาระทางวิชาการของหนังสือเล่มนี้จะยังประโยชน์ให้แก่ผู้อ่าน ไม่เพียงแต่ในสาขาวิชาที่ได้กล่าวไปแล้ว ทว่ายังครอบคลุมถึงผู้ที่สนใจค้นคว้าหาความรู้ในลักษณะสหวิทยาการ ซึ่งเกี่ยวข้องเชื่อมโยงกับประเด็นวิจัยทางด้านเศรษฐกิจสร้างสรรค์ การพัฒนาอย่างยั่งยืน การท่องเที่ยวเชิงเกษตรและวัฒนธรรม การวางผังเมืองและชุมชน รวมทั้งการอนุรักษ์และบริหารมรดกทางวัฒนธรรม และศิลปศึกษา อีกด้วย SYNOPSIS Encompassing a collection of original research essays, Bridging the Horizons featured quadripartite chapters of in-depth investigations on how cross-cultural learning and interactions between Thais and foreigners were cultivated via a series of workshops, study trips, ethnographic fieldworks and project-based learning (PBL) assignments, which were jointly organized in Thailand by students from King Mongkut's Institute of Technology (KMITL) and their international colleagues in 2013, 2015, 2017, and 2018. Apart from dissolving conventional disciplinary boundaries, the scholarly contents of the book not only demonstrated multi-dimensional advancements of knowledge in architectural and design pedagogy, but also expansive scopes of intellectual profundity. Incorporating a mixture of both qualitative and quantitative methods, both the objects and subjects of inquiries were diverse. Under a thematic fil rouge of fostering cross-cultural learning and interactions through cooperative, collaborative, and coordinative pedagogical approaches, all constituting chapters in Bridging the Horizons aimed to engage multiple readerships, ranging from architectural, artistic, historical, educational, archaeological, social, and ethnographic researches, to studies on creative economy, sustainable development, cultural and agro-tourism, urban and regional planning, together with heritage conservation and management.
